(ECNS) -- Health authorities in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, have sealed two properties suspected of operating illegal surrogacy services, according to a statement released Monday by the city's health commission.
The commission received a report on Sunday afternoon regarding suspected surrogacy activities at rented villas in the city's Gongshu and Xihu districts, it stated.
Law enforcement personnel were sent to the sites where they discovered medical equipment and pharmaceuticals related to assisted reproductive technologies. The premises were immediately sealed, and items confiscated.
The commission said it coordinated with local police during the operation and pledged to handle the case "in accordance with laws and regulations" as the investigation progresses.
