(ECNS) -- China has launched the world’s largest power methanol dual-fuel marine engine in Shanghai, according to China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) on Tuesday.
The engine, which owns fully independent intellectual property rights, runs on methanol as fuel, delivering a maximum power output of 64,500 kilowatts and weighing 1,953 metric tons.
Equipped with an advanced digital intelligent control system, it achieves a methanol substitution rate of over 95 percent for traditional diesel power, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 7.5 percent. It holds great market potential in the shipping industry's green and low-carbon transformation.
Dong Jingjin, project manager of CSSC methanol engine, stated that the engine has already been applied to container ships and bulk carriers, adding that the demand for methanol engine orders in the future remains significant.
Over the next two to three years, CSSC plans to launch different types of methanol engines, which are expected to be applied to more specialized vessels, including chemical tankers.
This type of engine will soon make its debut on a 16,000 TEU container ship.
